PORTFOLIO

A portfolio must be presented for evaluation by the applicant at the time of the personal interview, or must be received by the school prior to the telephone interview.

Preparing for Your Interview at JKS

Your eligibility for acceptance by THE JOE KUBERT SCHOOL OF CARTOON AND GRAPHIC ART, INC., will be determined by two major factors: your initial ability and your attitude.

Your capability will be assessed by your portfolio. We are simply trying to determine the applicant's level of competency. However; determination and commitment are deciding factors.

The following considerations should be observed in organizing and presenting your portfolio:

*Portfolios should consist of no more than twenty-five (25) and no less than fifteen (15) pieces of your artwork. Your choices should be the best and most representative examples of your artwork. No more than three pieces should be older than three years. The rest, more current.

*Your original artwork should be no larger than 14" x 17". Larger pieces (and sculpture, ceramics, murals, furniture, clothing, etc.) can be displayed as photos, slides or on VHS videotape. You do not have to show originals -good quality photocopies are acceptable.

*Variety of subject matter, format, technique and media are encouraged. The Joe Kubert School will consider examples of portraiture, life-drawing, landscapes, still-lifes, architectural plans, etc. It will also consider comic books, comic strips, gag cartoons, illustrations, ad layouts, storyboards, pencil tests, etc. Finally it will also consider artwork done in pencil, charcoal, pen & ink, pastel, colored pencil, marker, oil paints, acrylic paint, airbrush, watercolor, gouache, etc.

*If you are seeking a telephone interview because of distances, we recommend that you attach to your portfolio a nametag that can be purchased at any luggage shop. Print or type out your name, address and phone number on all artwork. We also request for any telephone interviews that you number each piece and include a sheet listing the various pieces by number and include a title, media description, and subject description for each piece. Please include your name, address and phone number on this sheet, as well.

The applicant must include a stamped, self-addressed envelope and money order in with the portfolio. The money order is to have the proper amount for return postage in order to have the portfolio returned. Personal checks will not be acceptable for this purpose.

The school exercises all reasonable care in handling of portfolios, but assumes no liability for loss or damage to them.
