Hey guys, just letting you know that I am halfway finished with my original horror graphic novel Unholy Night, sorry if I haven't posted in awhile. I am officially in art school now, started in Septemmber and the class is great. Basic drawing that's what it is soon I will gradually move up on the periodic table. I almost had a scanner, my neighbor is going to be leaving pretty soon and he had a bunch of computer equipment that he was giving away well actually selling and he had this scanner that he sold to some guy, I just found this out tonight and the apartment sale was two weeks ago. Oh well.

Are you up in NJ at the JKS itself?? Or somewhere else? -- if so what class section are you in?
Everyday should begin with a laugh. |

I have applied at a local art school down here in San Antonio, the school is called Southwest School of Arts and Crafts, it is an excellent class. The teacher is showing you how to draw certain things every step of the way. I only had to pay $200 bucks to get into this class and I am enjoying it greatly. There is so much that I am getting out of it. The only thing that I have trouble with is blind contour drawings, other than that I am doing perfectly, I'll definitely have to post some of my artwork on the forum as soon as I find the scanner that I am looking for.

Ah, so its not like you have a weeks worth of classes? Just that basic drawing one -- very cool, yea go ahead and post work here... or get a free gallery somewhere like Photobucket.com or DeviantArt or something and link em.
personally Im here at the JKS right now, and weve got 10 classes a week and its pretty crazy, but I dont think location matters much as long as whatever it is is helpful.
Good luck to ya.

I have always wanted to go to the Kubert School, what do you think of it so far, I am taking a couple of correspondence courses right now mainly the penciling course and the horror course. I am starting to like the horror course a lot and I am getting a lot of cool ideas for my stories that I write. Do they have a class where they teach you how to write or own scripts for graphic novels or comic books? Just curious that's all.

For primarily writing, unfortunately not... but they do pack on the basics like a ton of bricks. Alot of the stuff that is taught, is in preparation of creating a personal portfolio (just like you would give to a client) Myself, I think its great - though at the moment Im a little behind trying to get a few pages of "perspective work" done for Monday morning x_X -- its helping me alot in other ways because Ive really had no prior art training of any sort before this. So far, amongst the 10 classes (that are the same and last all year from Sept. till May) weve done brush+nib inking, stipple drawings (lotsa tiny dots) several 5+ panel sequential pages as well as some single panel drawings (pretty much everything is 14"x17" with a 10"x15" image area) along with inking some of the pencil assignments weve had.
Like I said, crazy -- and except for perspective ruining my life right now -- Im enjoying it thoroughly.
Theres not much there right now, but you can check out my Photobucket.com gallery here http://photobucket.com/albums/v226/SunshineFox/ if ya want... and I admit, the reason Im here is because Im still learning but take a look around.
Good luck to ya again
(Oops... how could I forget to mention: ink washes, coloring, charicatures -- gotta love variety)

The pencils that they recommend me using in Basic Drawing is 4b and 6b type pencils, I have a huge drawing pad that is 14" x 17" and I have to carry that thing with me all over downtown. My father gives me a lift to the school and once I am finished I take a bus back to my apartment, so that is most of my day. I have class only one time a week, it sucks though because I am stuck at my apartment throughout the rest of the week and am doing nothing but writing scripts and practicing on proportioning the figure. I have several art books on how to draw dynamic anatomy, also on drawing the human head. There is this one book that I thought was pretty good and that one I believe is called How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way. As far as the writing goes I am thinking on obtaining a book called the DC guide to writing comics. It is getting late and I should be retiring pretty soon although it is only 6:30 down here in Texas, so I will hopefully hear from you soon.

Hello Sunshinefox I just had a look at your drawings on photobucket and was amased when i got to picture 15 (JKS Portfolio). I'd expected a picture of child of six years. Please don't be mad at me but my daughter with her seven years draws exactly like you. I really wonder how you could be accepted to go to the school.. Either the school just want the money and take everybody who can pay or they just haven't enough students. No hard feelings but you have a long way ahead of you to make some money with your art if you have that in mind, that is.
Regards Mellory

No hard feelings taken... I guess - but Ive 2 things for you to put into your consideration before judging others -- (a)if you would take the time to read my last few posts youd notice I mention specifically that Im NOT a "professional" yet by any means and (b)that you should put your money where your mouth is and prove me wrong by posting something yourself.
Either you dont understand the meaning of "art SCHOOL" or the word "school" in general, and the fact of the matter is that IM HERE and the JKS accepts people into their program in regards to 2 requirements (and the school will tell you that "no prior experience needed") the 2 requirements being level of ABILITY and ATTITUDE or commitment/dedication to improve and not be a "lazy ass" about homework and such.
-- an old indian proverb reads (also related in other cultures respectively) : Before judging my neighbor, I should walk a mile in his moccasins *shoes*.
Cya in the funny papers - where Ill eventually be working. Everyday should begin with a laugh.

Thanks, theres actually quite a few pieces that are NOT on there right now... mainly because the majority of work is done on 11"x17" ledger/bristol with a 10"x15" image area -- but my scanner is too small and I really dont have time to play *jig-saw puzzle* with my art in Photoshop.
No matter how much I or anyone else will say about the workload up here -- I guess it depends on the individual, but 10+ assignments a week (2 each day) with sometime assginments requiring more than one page to complete, its quite hectic -- Im on average busy from about 4pm - 1am working on homework.
Which is what Im headed back to right now.

Have they given you an assignment to create and design your own comic book page? I don't know if any of you guys do this though but I layout the comic book page and work panel by panel. I only focus on one panel at a time, but there are some people who layout the whole comic page first then add little by little. I am just curious as to finding out how any of you would handle a situation like that? Thanks.

Well, for my narrative class Adam Kubert is my instructor and he gives us a rough idea to work with and then a minimum panel requirement and then we a week for full size rough and another week to get tight pencils... For me I usually outline what I want for the page and then simply each "sub-point" in that outline and then I think about and finalize what point of view I want for each panel -- then finally I begin working out roughs on the page - and I sporadically jump around sometimes because that way, it gives the entire page a "well rounded" feel so as one panel (that may have a lot going on) doesnt stick out like a sore thumb -- good luck on that horror thing your doing -- forgot to mention that before.

Thanks I am writing the plot basically for the nine issue horror miniseries, have you ever experienced that when all of a sudden you have a floodgate of ideas flow into your head? I thought it was pretty cool to have come up with an excellent idea for a horror comic series, I am looking for people to help me design what these figures would look like and if someone helps me they will get a credit on the credits page of my comic book series, that is if you are interested in helping me out. Here is my e-mail address and I will immediately contact you once you send me something:
johh_rizo@sbcglobal.net
P.S please ignore the fact that my mother's name is on the reply message, my real name is John. Thanks again.

NAGRUL: well, homework here is taking up alot of my free time, and I cant really do much else, but maybe if you catch me on AIM or MSN sometime we can talk
MELLORY: Your stuff is very nice and well done -- youre a better artist than me "right now"... Since youre giving me nothing to go on here Im not sure what you mean by posting those... I direct you back to my 1st reply, about this being the Joe Kubert SCHOOL and that the definition of SCHOOL is a place of LEARNING... Further more if you are trying to be sincere in saying "Ive got a looong way to go" -- then youre doing a real lousy job of it, a waste of the schools time as I believe you roughly put it.("accepted for the need of money or something...") Im very clearly aware there are people who are better than me, putting me in comparison to your 7 year old is a little insulting -- as well as the fact the JKS "DID" accept me WHY do you think Im in an ART SCHOOL.
Well anyways, Im not "mad at you" per say, but learn to respect other artists the way you'd like to be respected. Good luck in your own endeavors.
Everyday should begin with a laugh.
