Here's what you need to know about paper!

Cotton Fiber Papers:
Or "Rag Paper" - the best choice when seeking permanence and durability.

Cotton fibers are longer than wood, creating a stronger bond which holds up through repeated erasing.

Also, they don't have the resinous impurities found in wood fiber, making the sheet more resistant to color shifts upon aging.

Ply:
A single thickness (sheet) of paper. Each ply is pasted together to increase thickness & stiffness.

Pounds:
Basic weight - the weight in pounds of a ream (500 sheets) of paper in a given size.

So: a "140 LB. Watercolor Paper" is one in which a ream of the 22" x 30" sheets actually weighs 140 pounds.

Smooth or Plate:
Sheets are pressed repeatedly under hot plates to achieve a very smooth finish. Also referred to as "hot pressed".

Vellum: Paper with a minimum or moderate tooth (roughness). Easily accepts pastels, pencil, charcoal and ink.

Cold Press: Medium surface.

Hot Press: Very smooth surface.

Rough: Coarse textured paper
